Oranges are cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The trees can grow in a wide range of soil conditions, from extremely sandy to rather heavy clay loams, though they grow best in intermediate soil types.

Local growing conditions, such as climate, soil type and grove practices, have a major influence on the quality of fruit produced and on the extracted juice. Like any other fruit trees, orange trees are susceptible to diseases.

Oranges can only ripen on the tree, and the quality of the fruit begins to deteriorate immediately after picking. Therefore, the time between picking fruit and processing it into juice and other products should ideally be as short as possible- less than 24 hours – even if longer periods are not uncommon.

The orange is a hybrid of ancient cultivated origin, possibly between pomelo and tangerine. It is a small flowering tree growing to about 10 meters tall with glossy evergreen leaves, which are arranged alternately, of ovate shape with crenulate margins and 4–10 centimetres long.

Orange blossoms have been used in weddings and the orange oil has been used in flavouring of food and drink and in adding fragrance to such products as perfume, wood conditioners, and cleaning agents. Citrus plants are small trees or large shrubs, reaching 5 to 15 meters tall, with spiny shoots and alternately arranged evergreen leaves with an entire margin.

Oranges are a good source of fibre and potassium, both of which can support heart health. One cup of orange juice can provide 14% of a person’s daily potassium requirement.

Oranges are round citrus fruits with juicy flesh and pebbled orange skin. Most people think of them as an excellent source of vitamin C (and they are), but oranges offer a lot more—like calcium, potassium, fibre, and folate—making them a nutritious option. Plus, they’re easy to find, eat, store, and cook with.

Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, packing in more than a day’s worth of this immune-boosting nutrient in one small serving. Oranges also provide bone-strengthening calcium, along with potassium and the B vitamins thiamin (B1) and folate (B9). A medium orange contains more than half the potassium found in one medium (118g) banana.

Oranges have many health benefits. They are rich in Vitamins C and A, flavonoids, antioxidants, calcium, magnesium, potassium, dietary fibre etc. Oranges have more than 60 flavonoids and 170 phytonutrients that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour and anti-oxidant properties.
