Jackfruit contains Vitamin A, Vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, sodium, zinc and niacin among many other nutrients. Both the seeds and the flesh of jackfruit are consumed as curries and boiled forms, while the flesh in fully ripen stage can be eaten directly as a fruit.

Jack tree is a medium-sized evergreen tree, and typically reaches 8-25 m in height. The tree grows rapidly in early years, up to 1.5 m/year (5 ft/year) in height, slowing to about 0.5 m/year (20 in/year) as the tree reaches maturity. It has a straight rough stem and a green or black bark which has a thickness of around 1.25cm, exuding milky latex.

Jackfruit, due to low acidity, is the only fruit that can be consumed as a meal replacing your regular carbohydrates such as wheat and rice in full or part. A study done by National Health Service, UK, showed that low consumption of vegetables and fruits shorten life more than lack of exercise. So when we cook and consume raw jackfruit as a meal, the quantity consumed in one meal itself is more than the vegetable and fruit we consume in a whole week!

Jackfruit is quite healthy. It provides a moderate amount of calories in addition to lots of fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

While you prepare it, you will first want to slice it in half and remove the yellow fruit pods and seeds from the skin and core. You can do this with a knife or your hands.

It is important to note that the white, fibrous part inside of jackfruit is incredibly sticky, so it may be helpful to wear gloves while handling it.
